Motorsport Photography at Snetterton: More Than Just the Racing
Updated: Sep 22

Snetterton is one of the UK's best known motor racing circuits and, being based in Norfolk, it is also right on my doorstep. For a motorsport photographer, though, a race weekend is about far more than simply photographing cars travelling quickly around a circuit.
Good motorsport photography tells the whole story. The preparation in the paddock, the concentration of the driver, the work of the team, the sponsors that make racing possible and, of course, the action out on track.
I recently spent time at Snetterton photographing a race programme and it was a perfect opportunity to capture that complete story, both on and off the circuit.
Capturing the action at Snetterton
Photographing cars at racing speed presents a very different challenge from most other forms of photography. Simply freezing a car with a very fast shutter speed can produce a technically sharp photograph, but it can also make a racing car look as though it is parked on the circuit.
Panning allows me to keep the car sharp while introducing movement into the track, barriers and background. The result gives the photograph a much greater sense of speed and places the viewer right into the action.

Motorsport photography is more than cars on track
Some of my favourite photographs from a race weekend are taken away from the circuit itself.
The paddock and garage tell another side of the story. Drivers preparing for a session, engineers working on the car, conversations between team members and those quieter moments before a driver heads out onto the track all help build a much more complete picture of the weekend.
For drivers and teams, these images are particularly valuable. They provide professional content for websites, social media and press coverage, while also giving sponsors much greater visibility than race action photographs alone.
Photography for drivers, teams and sponsors
Motorsport increasingly depends on how drivers and teams present themselves away from the circuit as well as how they perform on it.
A strong collection of photographs from a race weekend gives a driver content they can use throughout the season. That might include dramatic race imagery, portraits, behind the scenes photographs, team shots and images created specifically with sponsors and social media in mind.
I therefore shoot a mixture of portrait and landscape images during a race weekend, giving clients photographs suitable for Instagram, websites, press releases, sponsorship proposals and other promotional material.
Rather than simply arriving at Snetterton and photographing the racing, I can tailor the coverage around the driver, family or team and the content they actually need.
